We held another very successful Bat walk and talk in June, kindly led by Ian Butterfield from West Yorkshire Bat group. Although we had to wait until quite late to see our first bats, when they arrived they came in droves. They were wheeling and diving all around us in their hunt for their insect supper. Ian reassured us that with their amazing 'echo location' ability, they would not fly into us. We saw Pipistrelles (very small ones), Noctules (very big ones) and over Coppice Pond were Daubenton's bats skimming low over the water looking for food (which apparently they catch with big hairy feet!). Ian distributed Bat Detectors amongst us and so we were all able to hear the strange sounds of the bats as they flew around us. We discovered that bats actually have very good eyesight and they can live for 30 to 40 years. They really are amazing creatures. |
